  • 2016 The Ironstone Pressings GSM, d'Arenberg, McLaren Vale

Built to age, this is named for the ironstone in the soil at the old-vine vineyards where d'Arenberg grows the grenache, shiraz and mourvedre for this blend. It's made in the family's traditional style, delivering an austere and rustically tannic red that's saturated with blackend purple plum flavour, the fruit cool, the tannins warm. Those elements will merge over the coming decade, deepening and expanding the wine's breadth of flavour.

d'Arenberg's 2017 The Ironstone Pressings Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre is almost a 50-50 blend of the main varieties, with the actual numbers being 50% Grenache, 47% Shiraz and 3% Mourvèdre. Scents of camphor, raspberries and cassis emerge on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is firm and only slightly giving, leading into a long, mouth-drying finish. It's not the easiest wine to drink young, but it should reward 3-4 years of cellaring and drink well for a decade after that.

A sullen and savoury nose that is about the site and winemaking technique; stemmy red cherry and earth get a semblance of spice but everything is in balance. This is a complete wine that is led by itÆs lovely texture interplay between what are subtle, delicate flavours and a baseline of tannin and acidity that gives them definition and presence. Dark cherry is at the wines core and is accentuated by fresh earth and bitter dark chocolate. The finish is drying but substantial. A wine to think about as you enjoy it now, but will unravel beautifully with age. Optimal Drinking 2019 - 2035.
